SUSAN FRANCIA WINS WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP

ETON, ENGLAND, August 26, 2006: US Athletic Trust athlete and University of Pennsylvania grad ('04) Susan Francia helped power the USA women's eight to a gold medal and world best time in the 2006 World Rowing Championships held at Dorney Lake in Eton, England. The rough and choppy conditions that prevailed during the entire competition made it hard for crews to gain maximum benefit from the strong tailwind. If anything the conditions were at their most challenging on Sunday 27 August, the last day of finals. The crew pulled off an excellent strategy which was to get out fast, gain a 1 length lead by the half way mark (1000 meters) and stay ahead in the final and increasingly choppy 1000 meters where race favourites in other events came to grief. The strong and determined USA line-up maintained the lead over the key rival (Germany) to win by a margin of just under 2 seconds (half a length), in an overall time of 5:55.50, which is a new world best time.

Susan is a two time national team member and has emerged this year as one of the key players on the squad. She is 24 years old, from Abingdon PA, and lives and trains in Princeton N.J., and is 6'2" tall. In the women's eight, Susan is at the six seat which is often called the "engine room," but also note that she and team mate Brett Sickler (bow seat in the eight) won the 2006 U.S. National Team Trials in the women's double sculls. This is a highly technical event and speaks very well for Susan's rowing expertise. It is just possible to race the eight oared and double scull events at the World Championships because racing is mainly on separate days. Susan and Brett did just that and produced a credible semi final (top 12) performance in the double. Two other members of the women's eight also rowed in an additional event (women's pair) and it may be that the additional racing helped the big team boat master the choppy conditions.

Congratulations to World Champion Susan Francia!

As reported by US Athletic Trust Rowing Chairperson Anne Marden

U.S. ATHLETIC TRUST ATHLETES DOMINATE AT USATF NATIONALS

INDIANAPOLIS, IA, June 25, 2006: As many of you know, this past weekend was the USATF Nationals, the most important event on the domestic calendar for all American Track and Field athletes. This is the event that crowns the annual National Champions and, in a World Championship or an Olympic year, qualifies athletes for those lofty competitions. This year's edition took place in Indianapolis, IN, the home of USATF, and the competition was fierce.

The U.S. Athletic Trust had five athletes entered: Adam Nelson in the shot put, Tora Harris in the high jump, Gabriel Jennings in the 1500m, Brian Chaput in the javelin and Sam Burley in the 800m. All athletes qualified for their respective finals placed no worse than 4th and all went on to turn in brilliant performances in pursuit of the title of U.S. National Champion. Please read below for the individual results.

Tora Harris wins High Jump and Sets World's Best Mark for 2006: It's possible to point to Tora Harris as the starting point of the U.S. Athletic Trust. When Tora graduated from Princeton in 2002, although he was the indoor and outdoor NCAA champion, he had not been offered any support from USATF, the USOC or a corporate sponsor. Facing the possible end of his career due to financial stress, Tora found salvation in the form of longtime Trust donor Rob Merrilees (an accomplished high jumper in his own right), who was interested in supporting Princeton high jumpers on the Olympic track. Tora went on to compete in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and is on track to be atop the podium in Beijing. This weekend, he jumped a personal best (2.33/7-07.75) and a world-leading best for 2006, winning the competition and earning the title of National Champion. In addition to being the country's best high jumper, Tora is also an avid technophile and recently produced a fabulously inspiring promotional video. Visit this link to watch (it's more than worth it!).

Adam Nelson Bests Outstanding Shot Put Field: After a stunning World Championships victory in 2005, Adam has struggled through an injury-plagued 2006 season. Yet all that seems behind him now after posting a 22.04m (72-03.75) come-from-behind, competition-winning throw, beating perennial competitors Reese Hoffa and Christian Cantwell and thereby earning the coveted title of 2006 National Champion. The U.S. Athletic Trust has supported Adam since 2001.

Gabe Jennings Signals His Return with Second Place Finish: In 2000, Gabe Jennings was the future of American miling: he won the U.S. Olympic Trials and went on to make the semifinals in the 1500m in Sydney. But after that he turned away from Track and Field to broaden his perspective, only returning to competition late last year, albeit unsupported and unheralded. But this weekend's 2nd place finish in the 1500m (3:39.42) to American record holder, Bernard Legat, signals the fact that Gabe is back, he's fit, and he's ready for the run-up to Beijing. Always a colorful interviewee, visit letsrun.com's site for a read of Gabe's thoughts on the weekend. The U.S. Athletic Trust was one of the first sources of support for Gabe when he returned to competition last year.

Brian Chaput Takes Third in the Javelin in First Major Competition: One year ago Brian Chaput was on top of the javelin world: he had won the Penn Relays, the Adidas Track Classic, the Reebok Invitational and the Payton Jordan U.S. Championships. But a serious and episodic injury cut short his season and launched him into a year of surgery and intensive rehabilitation. But after a 12-month layoff and in his first serious meet back, Brian is back and as strong as ever, having spent much of his year working on parts of his athletic profile he knew he could improve. His third place finish (76.44m, 250-09) places him firmly on the podium and serves as a warning sign to his competition.

Sam Burley Gets Up for Fourth Place in the Finals of the 800m: After a strong indoor season, culminating in a 3rd place finish at the USATF Indoor Nationals in Boston, Sam followed up with a strong 4th place at Outdoor Nationals this weekend. Sam dipped under the 1:46 barrier, running a 1:45.93 and missing the podium by a mere 2/100 of a second.

U.S. ATHLETIC TRUST FENCERS MEET IN NORTH AMERICAN CUP FINAL

SACRAMENTO, CA, April 28, 2006: The recent North American Cup for fencing on April 21, 20061 in Sacramento, CA featured an all-U.S. Athletic Trust final in the women's epee event, with Maya Lawrence defeating Lindsay Campbell (15-11) for first place. Maya and Lindsay have been teammates and training partners for seven and a half years, but this is the first time they've gotten to fence for first place. (In the past, they were on the team together at Princeton University, now they both represent the New York Fencers Club, though Maya has moved to France and Lindsay is finishing graduate school in Boston.)

Leading up to their big bout, Maya defeated Courtney Hurley (15-14), the current #2 seed in the United States in the round of four and Lindsay defeated Kelley Hurley (15-9), the current #1 seed in the United States in the round of eight. Earlier in the day, they both went undefeated in the preliminary pool round. In the second pool round, Maya lost just one bout and Lindsay lost two. They easily advance from the round of 64, to 32, to 16, to 12, to 8, to 4, defeating many of their opponents by wide margins, with scores of 15-3, 15-4, and so on. Both fencers were extremely pleased with the day, and are preparing for a number of upcoming World Cup events. They will both compete in the Barcelona Grand Prix on May 12 and are hoping for a rematch of their bout at Nationals Championships in Atlanta on July 4.
